Before deactivating a USDOT number, you should first make sure that it is no longer needed.
So, when is a USDOT number mandatory?
These include situations where:
1. The truck has a rated GVWR of 10,000 pounds or more (keep in mind that this rule also applies when the truck is used with a trailer);
2. The truck is used for the purpose of transporting eight or more people (including the driver), provided that the purpose of the transport is to make a profit;
3. The truck is used to transport sixteen or more people (the driver is included in this number), but the purpose of transportation is not to make a profit;
4. The truck is used to transport hazardous materials — those in the HazMat category.
If you do not need a U.S. DOT number, you will need to fill out a special form to deactivate it.
How do I cancel a USDOT number?
This process involves several steps.
Step #1
Download the MCS-150 to your PC. Print all pages of the form. There are 9 of them. Note that this form is universal. It is suitable for both registration and revocation of a USDOT number. So read what is written carefully.
Step #2
Enter the information in items one through sixteenth, as well as the thirtieth. At the top, state your reason for applying. Don’t forget to check the «Notice of Absence from Work» box.
Step #3
Study what is written in the thirtieth paragraph and follow it. Print out all the sheets and write the name and title of the person who has the authority to sign documents on behalf of the company from the first paragraph. This person should sign the form.
Step #4
Photocopy the completed form and keep it. Send the original to the following address: 1200 New Jersey Avenue SE Washington, DC 20590.
All you have to do now is wait for a response. It usually takes about a month to get a decision. Sometimes it can take up to six weeks.
